Better Life Before

Years ago the world was so much better. Twenty years or even Fifty years, there was less hate, less crime, and less disrespect. Everyone treated each other fairly and equally.

Everything was affordable and Everyone smiled at each other.

Where has the world gone?

Now that the satirical NONSENSE is out of the way, that notion that people think that years past was so much better is a bunch of CRAP! Not that the world today is by any means better.

The misinformation and the misguidance of times are leading to a misunderstanding of social issues in the economy. The lies and misdirection are sending ripples around the world that cause a tsunami of repercussions that may last for decades or even centuries to come.

So, why do we hear this, “Life was so much better decades ago?” The culprit behind that ideology is nostalgia.

Nostalgia blinds us of the past problems and events with rose tinted glasses. We forget the tragic events and the bad times that accompanied our childhoods and teenage years. People always strive for the “good old days,” but no one agrees with what that time is. Funny enough, the only thing that people can agree on is the constant want of the feeling of nostalgia.

Twenty years ago, in the mid 2000’s, the world was struggling still struggling with HIV/AIDS in Africa, concerns about climate change, and the humanitarian crisis caused by the Iraq War, to name a few. Though it has been getting better, the inequality of same-sex marriage rights plagued the world, and the growing inequality between rich and poor became ever more so apparent.

Thirty years ago, in the 90’s, Civil Rights Movements were still active and ongoing, facing combative roadblocks every step of the way. Gender inequality was gaining ground concerning the pay gap and reproductive rights but were still fighting an uphill battle. Lest not forget the tension from the Cold War was still there between the US and the Soviet Union, which lasted from 1947 till its end in 1991.

Forty years ago, in the 80’s, racial segregation and discrimination was prevalent all around the world. The Aids epidemic was a major health crisis which also lead to misguided hatred toward the LGBT community. Many nations around the world were struggling with limited access to basic necessities even in developing countries.

Fifty years ago, in the 70’s, saw the peak of the Civil Rights movement where the racial segregation and discrimination was at its peak. The Vietnam War caused major social unrest, especially in the US, with protests against the war occurred all around the country. Homosexuality was demonized and criminalized throughout the world.

The point is, is that the world has no “better times” to go back to. It is only better for certain societal classes and specific races and genders. People are oblivious and/or forgetful of what was happening right in front of them, especially if it does not involve them directly.

There was so much more that happened locally in every country, like the Tienanmen Square incident in 1989. This event saw protests and demonstrations from college students, against the Chinese government, wanting an economic reform away from the Communist Party.

Life before was not better! If we forget the past, then our future will be identical to the mistakes of the past.

Never go back! Always move forward.
